Crime Rates in Las Vegas and Throughout the State

Annual crime rates can give an overview of the types of crimes that are committed in a state and the frequency at which they happen. Generally, crime rates are broken into property crime and violent crime. The more urban and densely populated a city is, the more likely it will have a higher crime rate.

At the Law Offices of Garrett T. Ogata, we provide focused representation for people who have been charged with criminal offenses in Las Vegas. Attorney Ogata is an award-winning criminal defense attorney voted Best of Las Vegas by the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Annual Crime Rates

According to Neighborhood Scout, approximately 14,445 violent crimes are perpetrated each year in Nevada. The violent crime rate per 1,000 residents is 4.65. The violent crime rate is slightly higher than the national average. The chances of becoming a victim of a violent crime in the state are 1 in 215.

Additionally, an estimated 60,462 property crimes are committed annually, resulting in a property crime rate of 19.47 per 1,000 residents. The chances of becoming a victim of a property crime in Nevada are 1 in 51.

Overall, the state sees nearly 75,000 crimes with a statewide crime rate of 24.13 per 1,000 residents. If you are charged with a crime, it is strongly recommended that you contact a criminal defense attorney immediately.

Types of Crimes Commonly Committed

Property crimes such as theft, burglary, and motor vehicle theft are the most common crimes committed in the state. Violent crimes are substantially less likely to occur, although the previous year did see a 27% increase in the Nevada murder rate.

Violent crimes are defined as:

  • Murder
  • Nonnegligent manslaughter
  • Forcible rape
  • Robbery
  • Aggravated assault

As noted in The Nevada Independent, from 2019 to 2020, the United States saw an unprecedented rise in the number of murders, and Nevada was no exception. Unfortunately, this year has continued to see an increase in assaults and intentional killings. There have, however, been significant decreases in other types of crime. The state is reporting some of the “lowest levels of crime in decades.”

Las Vegas Crime Rates

As the state’s most populous city, Las Vegas sees some of the highest crime rates. In August, Fox 5 reported that the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police had seen a 69% increase in the number of murders compared to the previous year.

Neighborhood Scout’s data revealed that the city had an annual crime rate of 28.21 per 1,000 residents, with 3,429 violent crimes and 14,679 property crimes being reported yearly. The chances of experiencing a violent crime in Vegas are 1 in 187, while the chances of being the victim of a property crime are 1 in 44. Both of these are slightly higher than the statewide averages.
