Understanding the Measure of BAC for DUI Cases

Written by: The Law Offices of Garrett T. Ogata

Before you are arrested for a DUI, you have to be drunk. What qualifies you as drunk? In the state of Nevada, as well as other states, the legal limit is a blood alcohol content of .08. In medical terminology, that means that .08% of your blood is alcohol. While it’s difficult to determine how drunk you are after you’ve started drinking, there are some guidelines to go by that can help you figure out whether you’re safe to drive or not. Of course, as any Las Vegas DUI lawyer would tell you, the best strategy is not to drive at all after drinking. Still, here’s how to gauge how close you are to the legal limit.

There’s a chart that that takes into account factors like gender, body weight, number of drinks, and the time frame within which you drank them. One thing to keep in mind is that everyone is different, so that can have a strong bearing on the situation, and it’s up to you to learn how you react. However, the general rule is that you’ll be mildly sedated at .02; suffering from loss of inhibition and impaired judgment at .07; and at .08, you have physical and mental impairment, the inability to perceive danger, and poor muscle coordination. It obviously gets worse from there, with significant impairment at .15, lack of motor control at .20, and unconsciousness at .40. Before you ever get to that point, take stock of how you’re doing. If you get arrested for a DUI and find yourself in need of help, don’t hesitate to call a competent Las Vegas DUI lawyer.
